Procalcitonin (PCT) Semi-Quantitative Kit
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide consisting of 116 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 13 kDa. It is primarily produced in the C-cells of the thyroid gland, as well as in various other tissues such as the lungs, liver, and intestines. Elevated levels of procalcitonin (PCT) in the bloodstream result from an immune response triggered by bacterial infections. The presence of bacterial pathogens stimulates the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which in turn induces the synthesis and secretion of PCT. Procalcitonin levels in the bloodstream reach their peak within 6 to 24 hours. The amount of PCT secreted correlates positively with the severity of the bacterial infection; therefore, it serves as an important marker for the diagnosis of bacterial infections.
